pr-001Las Vegas, NV – Communities In Schools of Nevada (CISN) and Teach For America Las Vegas Valley recently received a joint award of $125,000 from the Changing Lives Community Fund to expand the CIS Academy program into Chaparral High School this fall.

In a first of its kind collaboration, CISN will collaborate with select Teach For America teachers to implement the CIS Academy curriculum at Chaparral High School. Students with risk factors for drop out such as credit deficiency and poor attendance are recommended to enroll in the CIS Academy elective course where they participate in a structured curriculum focused on life skills, goal setting, and college and career exploration, with the wraparound support from a full-time CISN site coordinator.

“Students face a variety of challenges that can hinder their success in school, and it is our mission to help them overcome these barriers so they can achieve in life,” said Terri Clark, CEO of Communities In Schools of Nevada. “The collaboration between CISN and Teach For America was a seamless partnership allowing us to expand our proven efforts to a new group of at-risk students. This honor from the Changing Lives Foundation will help us continue to better the lives of children and ensure they have access to a quality education.”

The CISN site coordinator will also address the underlying barriers to attendance, academic success and graduation by providing campus wide programming and access to basic needs resources to the students of Chaparral High School.
