Owner of Gold and Silver Pawn and star of History’s “Pawn Stars,” Rick “The Spotter” Harrison has pawning in his blood. As a high school dropout, Harrison made executive-level income while selling faux purses. At the age of 23 he partnered with his father, best known on the show as “The Old Man,” and has been using his well-trained eye and years of knowledge to weed out fakes and bring in big sellers at their family-owned shop.
At the successful shop there is almost always a line out of the door of eager show watchers hoping to get a glimpse of the now-famous locals.
Walk us through a typical day in your shoes.
I am filming from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. more than 40 weeks a year. Sometimes I am doing media on either coast or perhaps an appearance on weekends out of town. I really love spending time with my family and fiancée and fit that in during my off hours and my weekends are pretty sacred. I take in a concert on the weekends, when it is a band I like: Toby Keith, Bon Jovi, Santana, etc. During a day at Gold and Silver Pawn, whether filming or not, I am meeting with employees, customers, business partners, evaluating items and thinking, how did I get here? – He laughs after finishing that.
When it comes to free time, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?
Spending time with my family and enjoying doing the things the kids like. My youngest son is 8 and soon-to-be stepdaughters are 10 and 17.
Have you ever purchased any As Seen on TV Items?
No, absolutely not.
What celebrity are you most often told you look like?
Ronnie Montrose (guitar great and rock star) and I became friends this year; unfortunately he passed away recently. He was bald and said he was often mistaken for me. He used to tell me we were twin brothers from different mothers, RIP Ronnie.
If you could destroy any grade-school photo of yourself, what year would it be and why?
Wow … no idea … photos of me as a young man with hair are pretty weird to look at now.
While grocery shopping, what is your stick-in-the-cart-when-no-one-is-looking item?
Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies.
If we were to look through your iPod (or phone) what is on your top hit list, playlist or favorite app?
Toby Keith and I have connected recently, so I have his stuff on there. He’s a really cool guy.
What has been the most interesting part of becoming a nationally recognized celebrity? Or what do you miss the most about your privacy?
What do I miss most about losing my privacy? All of it, I have to wear hats and glasses more now to catch an alone moment when dining out with my family. It’s tough, but certainly worth it. We are very fortunate, we know that and want to ride the wave as long as we can, but we know it is finite. You won’t catch me complaining.
You can catch the crew of “Pawn Stars” on History Mondays at 9 p.m. or visit them in person at Gold and Silver Pawn located at 713 Las Vegas Boulevard, South or online at gspawn.com.
