Events to educate about healthy eating, growing food

Create a Change Now will host its first Circus Garden Party at the Historic Fifth Street School from 3-6 p.m. on Sept. 7. The circus-themed event will offer activities for all ages including stilt walkers, jugglers, face painting, balloon art, live music, as well as teaching as how to plant vegetables and healthy cooking demonstrations.

Guests can also sample cuisine from local restaurants including Bradley Ogden’s Hops & Harvest, Poppy Den by Chef Angelo Sosa and Rachel’s Kitchen. Fresh52 Farmers & Artisan Market will also be on hand with fresh produce.
“Our goal is to fight childhood obesity, which has become a national epidemic in this country. With our first big fundraiser, we are hoping to reach a large audience so this event is geared to entertain and appeal to the entire family,” said Melissa Blynn, executive director of Create a Change Now. “We hope the community will join us for what is sure to be an afternoon of fun.”

Create A Change Now is a nonprofit organization that fights childhood obesity by educating children on healthy eating habits and encourages a hands-on approach in the kitchen.
Create A Change Now aims to teach elementary school students how to plant edible gardens in schools while partnering with local chefs to teach students how to prepare and cook the food they harvest. Create a Change Now has gardens at several local elementary schools including: Rose Warren Elementary School, J.T. McWilliams Elementary School and Ollie Detweiler Elementary School.

Candace Maddin is the co-founder and president of Create a Change Now bringing nearly 30 years of highly successful business development and management. Her love of cooking inspired her to attend the Cordon Blue Cooking School in England and throughout the years she studied cooking with Jaques Pepin, Alice Waters, Martha Stewart and Flo Braker.
Her experience as a successful executive, business owner, wife and mother is part of her inspiration to give children of the next generation the education they need to make better choices for their health.

This fundraiser will support nutritional education, chef demonstrations as well as planting more edible gardens in schools. The event is open to the public. Tickets are on sale for $65 for couples and $40 for an individual ticket. Groups of four kids under 12 are free with purchase of adult tickets.
