A special store for bridal couples, unique gifts, and personal service
Locally owned and operated, Alligator Soup has been serving the Las Vegas Valley for over 30 years offering the largest selection of custom invitations, announcements and stationery in Nevada. The store also carries unique and one-of-a-kind gift items and home décor.
“The wedding industry is still our first love,” Helen Edell, co-owner said. “After all, the invitation sets the tone of the wedding. It allows us to be part of a very special event in a couple’s life. What a privilege that is. Today’s bride has many more choices than ever before in selecting their invitations. Depending on budget, a couple can choose from thermography, engraved, digital or letterpress from one of our 50 books or a custom design created by the Alligator Soup team. Pocket invitations have become very popular but we are seeing a movement back to a more traditional look with edginess to it.” Calligraphy services are also available from addressing envelope to writing out place cards.
Stationery and invitations include both boxed and personalized featuring such brands as Crane & Co. (the company that provides the paper for US currency), William Arthur, Arlene Segal, Sugar Paper, Smock and Elum. For parties or weddings, napkins, place cards and other personalized items are also available.
Alligator Soup gifts feature a selection of teapots, jewelry boxes, clocks, home office, books, journals, frames, pillows and a host of personalized gifts. Home décor items include candles, diffusers, body lotions, soaps and table top from such vendors as Thymes, Voluspa, Nest Fragrances, Michael Aram, Maple Leaf, Beatriz Ball and Simon Pearce. Alligator Soup offers a line of inspirational products by Kelly Rae Roberts, as well as humorous box signs and novel items such as the Dammit Doll. For children, talking animals, puzzles, journals and scented pencils have been a big hit.
According to Edell, greeting cards are making a comeback. Alligator Soup carries a wide variety of handmade and unique cards by Constance Kay and Papyrus. Also available are comedic inspired Frank and Funny cards, inspirational cards from Quotables and year of your birth cards and DVDs.
Alligator Soup is one of the last, small, independent stores that carries a variety of pens in all price ranges. They make great groomsmen and bridesmaids gifts as well as for corporate and personal gift giving. Featured brands are Cross, Acme, Lamy, Retro 51 and locally manufactured Fisher’s Space Pens.
Edell and Sharon Carelli opened the first Alligator Soup in 1982 and moved to its present location at 9350 W. Sahara Ave. in the Village Square shopping center in 1999.
The name Alligator Soup was inspired by a Canadian children’s book of whimsical poetry, “Alligator Pie,” written by a Canadian author similar to Dr. Seuss. “Alligator Pie” is also the name of one of the poems and Alligator Soup is the second stanza of the poem. Also, as Edell explained, “Alligator Soup is a whimsical name that puts us at the beginning of the Yellow Pages telephone directory because of the letter A and like a pot of soup; we can change the ingredients with the times.”
The business was started because “we saw a need and we filled a niche,” Edell explained. “When Sharon and I first met, we discovered a mutual love for stationery. Out of that grew the desire to open a store for fine stationery and gifts for both adults and children.”
Over the years, Alligator Soup has served celebrities from the comedic world, magicians, singers, entertainers and actors.
