Sisters Victoria Chen D.D.S., M.S. and Vinne Chen, D.D.S. (along with Dr. Victoria Chen’s husband Dr. Allen Huang, D.M.D., M.S.) have created Significance Dental Specialists, a leading dental care practice with an interdisciplinary dentistry specialist group including an endodontist, orthodontist and two periodontists with specialties. Services provided include implant, periodontal, orthodontic and endodontic care.
But there is more to this practice than superior service and treatment. It is part of a bigger picture of dentists who truly love what they are doing and have created an extended family which includes their patients. In fact, they were voted by their dentist peers as the Top Dentists for in 2011 and 2012 in Las Vegas Valley. Dr. Victoria Chen has been providing orthodontic care since 1999 and moved to Las Vegas in 2004 join her husband, Dr. Allen Huang, and open the practice. They have two daughters.
Dr. Victoria Chen graduated as the Valedictorian from her dental class at National Yang-Ming University, Taipei, Taiwan. In addition to her specialty training, Dr. Chen also obtained a DDS degree from Loma Linda School of Dentistry with Clinic Excellence Award. She received a full scholarship to University of Illinois at Chicago for orthodontic certification and a Master of Science degree in oral biology from the where she conducted clinical research in a new application of thermal active Ni-Ti-Canine Retraction Springs. Dr. Victoria Chen is a Board Diplomat of the American Association of Orthodontics and maintains an active membership in the American Board of Orthodontics, the American Dental Association, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, the Nevada Dental Society and the Las Vegas Interdisciplinary Study Club.
In 2002, Dr. Vinne Chen moved to Las Vegas to work with her older sister in the Significance Dental Specialists practice. She is married with one son and one daughter and her husband operates his own dental practice.
Dr. Vinne Chen attended the University of California at Berkeley where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree together with her identical twin sister in the field of biochemistry. Dr. Vinne Chen received numerous scholarships and prestigious awards as an undergraduate in Berkeley, but eventually chose the field of dentistry over medicine. She went on to receive her Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Columbia University. Following her general dental training, Dr. Vinne Chen earned a certificate in Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a board eligible Diplomat of the American Academy of Endodontics and member of numerous dental societies.
Dr. Victoria Chen entered her field because she felt it would offer her great opportunities. “I love being a dentist. As a woman, I felt I could really contribute, succeed and still have time for my family. I know with our practice, we can really change people’s lives.”
Dr. Vinne Chen agrees. “I felt dentistry was the right profession for me. I am very detail oriented and wanted to serve people in the medical field. While my twin sister is a medical doctor, I knew the precise work in dentistry would fit my personality.” She believes that “since we are identical twins, even though we chose different paths, we are still very connected.”
As for inspiration, Dr. Victoria Chen said that “once I gave birth to my children, I realized how much I influence people’s lives, not just my children but my patients as well.”
As part of the practice, traditional braces and Invisalign and Invisalign teen along with headgear free orthodontics by using the most current technology of Miniscrew Anchorage. Dr. Victoria Chen also offers the treatment of Accelerated Osteogentic Orthodontics, also known as Wilckodontics, where she can shorten treatment time from about three years to between three to six months. This principle not can be applied in acceleration of orthodontic treatment, ankylosed tooth and in molar up-righting cases.
“We use digital scanner, Itero, to scan and send our patients’ oral images directly to Invisalign company. It is impression free, and expedites the lab process for Invisalign. Patients love it,” Dr. Victoria Chen said.
Alone with miniscrew technology performed by her periodontist husband, Dr. Huang, Dr. Victoria Chen treats many challenging cases and has transformed patient’s facial profiles. Patients can look better and younger by just have miniscrew combined orthodonitic treatment without the surgical involvement of plastic surgery.
Their team always confers on cases and decides on the best treatment for their patients. “There are many courses of treatment,” Dr. Victoria Chen said.
“For example, a root canal might not be the right course of treatment. Implants might be better for a particular patient,” Dr. Vinne Chen added.
Dr. Victoria Chen’s husband, Dr. Huang, received his degree in Bio-Chemical Engineering from University of California at Los Angeles and his Doctoral of Dental Medicine degree from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Following his general dental training, Dr. Huang trained at Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at University of Illinois at Chicago and was named as the first Chief-Resident in program history. In addition to his specialty training, Dr. Huang also obtained a Master of Science degree in oral biology from the University of Illinois where he conducted clinical and histological research in bone regeneration in furcation defects in baboons. Dr. Huang was also involved in clinical and histological study of platelet rich plasma in sinus lift bone regeneration project. Dr. Huang is a Board Diplomat of the American Academy of Periodontology and member of the Academy of Osseointegration. Currently, Dr. Huang started his own dental implant company and is the CEO of Altosbiotech, LLC.
Jeff Wang, D.M.D., M.S. attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate and received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree from University of Pennsylvania. Following his general dental training, Dr. Wang earned a certificate in Periodontics at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Wang is a Board Diplomat of the American Academy of Periodontology and member of numerous dental societies.
All of the doctors are such an inspiration that one of their patients, who was studying to become a nurse, has decided to enter the field of dentistry and the doctors are mentoring her. Another patient, a high school student, is planning on working in the office to see if the field is right for them.
They have patients pursuing their dreams to be Miss Las Vegas Teen and Miss Asian Las Vegas and the dentists sponsor these patients with several of them being crowned as Miss Asian Las Vegas.
Dr. Victoria Chen and Dr. Vinne Chen truly love their professions and encourage women to consider entering this field.
“You really make a change in people’s lives,” Dr. Victoria Chen said. “It is a great career for a woman. It allows you freedom and gives you satisfaction.”
Dr. Vinne Chen advises, “However, be certain that you really love the profession. Don’t go into dentistry for money or prestige. Become a dentist because you want to help people and this is a good fit for your personality.”
“However, the biggest satisfaction is when a patient thanks me and tells me they can’t believe their smile. Some even say they want to stay in the office; it is so warm and comfortable,” Dr. Victoria Chen said.
Both doctors enjoy working with each other and are very close even during their time away from the office.
As for hobbies, Dr. Victoria Chen loves wine and is considering becoming a sommelier to really purse another of her passion. While she does not plan to leave her dental practice, Dr. Victoria Chen likes the idea of being one of the first dentists to also become a sommelier. “I can compare orthodontics to wine,” she said. “It is all about smiling and both teeth and wine have its own characteristics. It is also like a woman. As she ages, she changes for the better. Wine also evolves for the better and becomes a richer, fuller flavor.”
Dr. Victoria Chen also loves golf and it is an activity she shares with her two daughters.
Dr. Vinne Chen loves snow and recently switched from skiing to snowboarding. While Dr. Vinne Chen’s children are young, she is looking forward to the time she can share these activities with them.
Significance Dental Specialists has four locations and in all offices, patients’ comfort comes first. Movies and Xbox Kinect are offered long with beverages. Most important, the entire team cares and patients become friends and family members.
