Applications for families will be accepted beginning September 15

LAS VEGAS (September 15, 2014) – United Way of Southern Nevada was awarded a $1,000,000 grant to provide children ages five years and younger an opportunity to attend high-quality preschool programs. Windsong Trust, a private foundation for children’s education, funded the grant that will provide 250 full-time scholarships for one full year, as well as teacher training and professional development for 135 teachers. This is the 4th year that United Way has received this prestigious grant.

“We know quality early childhood education and family engagement are the keys to a successful academic future, and we believe every child deserves a solid start. This grant builds on our work in early childhood education and expands the scope to include more families, and to change more children’s lives” said Cass Palmer, President and CEO of United Way of Southern Nevada. “With roughly 70 percent of our children not in a preschool program, we know the need is great. With a solid preschool experience, children will enter Kindergarten ready to learn.”

The grant will help young children achieve academic success by giving them access to school readiness programs with trained childcare providers, teachers and directors.

Co-trustees of Windsong Trust stated that, “Preschool programs are essential in fostering scholastic achievement in today’s youth. Quality preschool programs lay a solid foundation for a child’s early development and enables them to build social skills, knowledge and self-confidence to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. We are proud and delighted to partner with United Way of Southern Nevada to continue this critical work.”
