Teryn Darling, CPCP, is a true artist, having performed tens of thousands of permanent cosmetic procedures. Darling has spent years studying and perfecting her craft by attending advanced training classes, seminars and workshops. She has studied under some of the best permanent makeup artists in the world. Darling spent a year and a half in a traditional tattoo apprenticeship at Skin Factory under master tattoo artist Eddie Lin. This is where she really had the opportunity to study and learn the art of tattooing, the art of fine lines, shading, blending, powdery effects and smudgy edges. Her mastery of artistic, symmetrical, technical and color application has made her one of the best and most sought-after permanent makeup artists in the industry. Darling can achieve any result desired, from light, soft and natural all the way to darker, bolder and more striking.
If asked what is permanent makeup, the short answer is cosmetic tattooing, a very specialized form of tattooing. Along with eyebrows, lash enhancement, eyeliner, full lip and beauty mark, she works with breast cancer survivors who need areola restoration and performs paramedical and scar camouflaging.
Originally from Maine, Darling was very artistic as a child. In 1991, she moved to Las Vegas and worked as a cocktail waitress for 10 years. After working in hospitality, Darling wanted to get back into art and, through personal experience with her own eyebrows, knew she wanted to work in permanent makeup.
“The human skin would become my new canvas. I studied esthetics and earned my license before starting my six-month apprenticeship in permanent makeup. Right out of my apprenticeship, I went to work as a permanent makeup artist for a medical office. I worked with an amazing doctor whom I really learned a lot from,” she said.
Darling also wants her clients to understand what to expect. “How long permanent makeup lasts depends on the skin, how much time is spent in the sun and other factors. I have clients with makeup that remains up to five years. Some clients need to come in sooner for a color re-fresh. On average, eyebrows will last about two years until they need a color re-fresh. Eyeliner tends to last longer, and lips will last the longest, averaging five to eight years.”
But the service Darling provides with Girlz Ink is more than just convenient. “I do makeup for people who are blind, have Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, lost a limb and other similar circumstances. I understand I am changing lives, and I am honored to make a difference.”
Darling supervises three artists at her studio, all trained by her. “They were hand-picked by me out of over 60 applicants to study under me and work at my studio,” she said. Darling is proud that she is a teacher, educator and lifelong student as well as an accomplished artist with permanent makeup.
