Dedicated to Caring & Helping Their PatientsWith breast cancer awareness month in October, Las Vegas Woman magazine is proud to feature the female physicians of Desert Radiology. Desert Radiology has taken a leadership role in early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, a disease that is expected to affect approximately 250,000 women in the United States in 2016, and is proud of their long-standing partnership with Susan G. Komen Nevada. Desert Radiology’s role is exemplified by their investment in the latest technology such as the 3D Mammogram, combined with an extensive team of radiologists that work hand-in-hand with the physicians of Southern Nevada.
There have been many developments in the detection of breast cancer in the last decade, but one of the clearest advancements is the availability of 3D mammography. Desert Radiology is a leader in the use of this cutting edge technology and wants all women to be aware that they have the option to get the most accurate, highest resolution mammography available in the market.
3D mammography is a process that allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. The equipment uses high-powered computing to convert digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers or “slices” —building what is essentially a “3-dimensional mammogram”. A good analogy for 3D mammography is like thinking of the pages in a book. Looking down at the cover, one cannot see all of the pages but open it up and one can go through the entire book page-by-page to see everything between the covers. 3D mammography is designed with the same concept in mind. The technology uses very low X-ray energy to reduce radiation exposure to below the FDA guidelines. Aside from reducing callback rates by up to 40 percent, 3D exams have proved to find more invasive cancers earlier than conventional 2D mammography. This is key since with early detection the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. 3D mammography is rapidly demonstrating to be the most effective way to offer every woman a better chance of survival, and Desert Radiology is there to provide this lifesaving diagnostic procedure.
With Desert Radiology since 2006, Dr. Lisa Wong can truly empathize with the fight against breast cancer and the importance of early detection. She is a breast cancer survivor and has been cancer-free for five years. Her gynecologist ordered a screening mammogram at Desert Radiology, and the result was abnormal. A biopsy confirmed she had cancer. “It was a surreal experience to be a patient where I work, and I’m so glad everything was caught at an early stage,” Dr. Wong said. Understanding the diagnostic process as both a doctor and patient, she is grateful to be healthy and to experience the satisfaction of continuing her work as a pediatric radiologist.
“We are consultants for other doctors. We are an important part of the medical team for their patients. We help them order the right tests, figure out difficult cases, and sometimes help plan the treatment.”
Dr. Wong has always been passionate about science, and in college her favorite class was parasitology, the study of parasites. “It was so interesting, and it really sparked my interest in medicine. I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, so a career in the medical field was the perfect choice for me,” she said.
