Behind the scenes with Elan BongiornoElan Bongiorno, an accomplished celebrity makeup artist and founder of Enjoué Beauté,
began her career in New York City working under some of makeup’s true masters. She created looks for runways, advertising campaigns and editorial pieces. Elan then moved to Los Angeles and signed with one of Tinseltown’s best agencies, Exclusive Artists Management. She quickly established herself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after makeup artists.

Makeup artist Elan BongiornoLas Vegas Woman sat down for a chat with Elan during a break from Eva Longoria’s new show, NBC’s “Telenovela,” and glamming Jane Fonda for her promotional tour.

Elan Bongiorno at workLas Vegas Woman: How did you to get into this industry?
Elan Bongiorno: It was a natural process. As a young girl, I always knew that I wanted to be in the beauty industry. I started cosmetology school at 17 years old. The first salon I worked in was an old lady salon where everyone was 80 or older.

LVW: Who has been the biggest driving force behind you?
EB: My husband, Anthony; we’ve been married 18 years. We met in the industry—he was a hairstylist, and I was his assistant years ago. In our industry, we never know where we are going, what the next project will be, and travel is endless. Without him, I would not be able to do what I do. He supports my career and me. I am lucky to have him.

LVW: What inspired you to create Enjoué Beauté?
EB: I saw the need to simplify women’s beauty routines. Enjoué offers color-coordinated palettes, classic wearable colors that are easy to custom blend and that all women can use.

Elan Bongiorno and celebrity clientLVW: What is the No. 1 “must-have” product from your line?
EB: Satin Primer is your skin’s new best friend. Oil-free Satin Primer reduces the appearance of fine lines and pores as it luxuriously glides onto the skin. Satin Primer creates a second skin that seals in moisture to keep skin hydrated, and protects from environmental damage.

LVW: What projects are you currently working on?
EB: “Telenovela” with Eva Longoria; it’s a half-hour comedy. Eva’s character is Ana Sofia, the star of a popular Spanish-language soap opera. One problem, though: She doesn’t speak any Spanish. Also, I am working with Jane Fonda. I travel with her for all the press and promos for her new show, Netflix’s “Frankie & Grace.”

LVW: If you had a superpower, what would it be?
EB: To read people’s minds. It could be really interesting or really scary. I would also like to transport from one country to another. How much fun would that be?

LVW: What advice would you give to those pursuing a career in the makeup industry?
EB: Promote yourself. When I started 20 years ago, there was no social media, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram. Today’s artists need to learn, understand and use social media. It’s free advertising with millions of people using it. You are your model and your own brand. It’s not easy, but we have to do it! And always give back—we were blessed with a gift, and it’s the right thing to do.

LVW: How would you describe yourself?
EB: Passionate because I love what I do—every face I paint, I love. Giving in the sense that I would rather give than take, whether it’s time or taking a friend to lunch. Professional—always be early, stay late, whatever is needed, I do without question. I appreciate where I am and who I am working with. I know there are 10 people behind who want my job, so no matter the client, I always keep it very professional.

LVW: You have an amazing career and have been part of some fabulous projects.
EB: I was fortunate to do the L’Oreal Paris campaigns with Eva. It’s the biggest in the world, and that was a huge accomplishment.

LVW: Is there anything else you want to share with the world?
EB: I am committed to helping women by getting involved with the community through domestic violence awareness programs. It’s all about giving back. That, to me, is the most beautiful thing we can do.

LVW: Philanthropy is near and dear to your heart. Tell us what you are involved with
and why.
EB: The American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program. It helps female cancer patients combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. I have also been a part of the Beauty Bus Foundation for over six years; we provide hair, makeup and nails to patients who are chronically or terminally ill. We also include their caregivers who take care of them. Volunteering feeds my soul!

We have a gift; we don’t just make celebrities look good, we make all women feel beautiful and feel good about themselves. That human touch and giving back—that keeps me going!
