For more than 20 years, Dr. Anu Thummala has been practicing and researching medicine. Board certified in the areas of oncology, hematology and internal medicine, the oncologist specializes in hematological malignancies, coagulation disorder and breast, lung and gastrointestinal tumors.
The oncologist enjoys her work immensely, stating that, “It is fascinating to know and learn from my patients how life can be lived (when) diagnosed with cancer. A lot can be learned from the positive perspective my patients bring to life. I am grateful to them for making me part of their lives. My advice to all is to eat well, enjoy everything life has to offer and be grateful.”
Dr. Thummala received her medical degree from Andhra University in India, where she received recognition for her scholarly achievements. She was acknowledged as best outgoing student and best final year student, and during her final year of medical school, was awarded outstanding student among women with the highest combined grade in medicine, surgery and gynecology.
She completed her internship at Rangaraya Medical College Hospital in India and soon after moved to New York for her internal medicine residency at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine at Elmhurst Hospital Center. While there, she was named outstanding first- and second-year resident. During the third year of her residency, she served as chief resident for the Department of Medicine. Dr. Thummala completed her fellowship in both hematology and oncology at the University of Rochester. For her clinical and laboratory research, the stellar student received the Amgen Fellowship Award, Empire State Grant and Cancer Action grants.
Joining the Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada in 2006 as a medical oncologist, Dr. Thummala served as chairman of the Quality Council at Mountain View Hospital and is the vice chairman of medicine at Summerlin Hospital. She is an active member of Summerlin Hospital’s Cancer Committee and leads the hospital’s Breast Tumor Board program. Dr. Thummala received the 2007-2008 Preceptor of the Year award from the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she is involved with the resident teaching program.
Currently, Dr. Thummala is the principal investigator for many breast cancer trials sponsored by the University of California, Los Angeles. She has had several published research projects that focus on the relationship between hot flashes and women with breast cancer.
The oncologist is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Hematology, the Clark County Medical Society and the American, Texas and Nevada State Medical Associations.
