What made you decide to consider bariatric surgery?
A woman my husband worked with had the surgery and told me about it. I’d never heard of Bariatric surgery before. At first I thought it was crazy. After more consideration, I decided this was something I needed to do and attended a seminar. After learning about the procedures and that my insurance would cover this type of medical option, I made the decision to move forward. That same day, I hit a jackpot after putting in just $20. That money was my co-pay for the surgery.
What was your experience like?
The doctors explained all of the procedures available. I didn’t want to do the LAP-BAND® or Gastric Band due to the aftercare required. I didn’t want to do the bypass surgery because I felt it was too extreme. I chose the bariatric sleeve because it was the best option for me.
How did you feel after the procedure?
I woke up and after a few hours of grogginess, I felt good. I was out of the hospital by noon the next day.
How was your recovery?
I was able to follow my doctors’ instructions on eating and learning to live differently. The weight started coming off and in the first month, I lost 22 pounds. It was a great impetus for me to keep going.
How long did it take you to lose the weight and how have you kept it off?
It took 10 months to lose the additional 95 pounds. It was beyond any expectation I had. I made sure I followed all of the rules, especially in the beginning, even though it wasn’t always easy. The greatest thing for me is that I have been able to maintain my weight. For me, it has been fabulous and the answer to weight loss that I needed.
