”The technological advances in the last 20 years have really made it an exciting time to be in medicine, particularly in women’s health.”
Dr. Darin Swainston, M.D., FACOG is a board certified OB/GYN with more than 20 years of experience. He’s a leading physician in robotic single-site hysterectomies and has completed more than 400 procedures since 2010, the most ever performed on the West Coast. “It’s a dream come true to follow in the footsteps of all my surgical heroes, I never thought I would someday be doing this,” said Dr. Swainston, “It’s [single site hysterectomy] a hot topic right now in the world of gynecological medicine.”
Dr. Swainston is a Las Vegas native, completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and then attending the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine in Reno, Nev. He completed his residency training at University Medical Centers in Las Vegas, selecting the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Among Dr. Swainston’s many recognitions, he has won Patients’ Choice Award for five consecutive years, from 2008 to 2013. In addition, he’s often asked to speak at conferences around the nation, including the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists in Washington D.C, and at the world robotics meeting in Chicago. Extending his efforts home and abroad, he’s conducted webinars for Intuitive Surgical, the company behind the robotics da Vinci Surgical System, and for miVIP Surgery Centers, which was broadcasted to surgeons in Russia.
Why did the doctor enter this field of specialty?
Delivering babies and providing healthcare services for women is a happy profession. ”The technological advances in the last 20 years have really made it an exciting time to be in medicine, particularly in women’s health.” Before robotics, he embraced laparoscopic assisted hysterectomies, allowing him to achieve his goal of less invasive vaginal surgery. It has evolved to include scarless surgery through natural orifices.
What should people expect with this surgery?
Robotics is a minimally invasive procedure using a magnified high-definition 3D vision system, which gives the surgeon the ability to remove the uterus without the use of mechanical morcellation. It also features special wristed instruments that bend and rotate far great than the human wrist. As a result, the da Vinci system enables the doctor to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control. About 98 percent of Dr. Swainston’s surgeries today are minimally invasive. Compared to a traditional hysterectomy, it provides several advantages including less blood loss during surgery, less scarring and faster recovery time.
Where is Dr. Swainston’s practice?
He is partners at his practice with long-time friend and colleague, Dr. John Martin, at the Women’s Health Associates of Southern Nevada’s Desert Shores branch care center. WHASN are a group of board certified obstetrician/gynecologists with 17 locations across the Las Vegas Valley. They offer a full range of comprehensive services to promote and maintain women’s healthcare needs.
