Knowledge is Power

Be Your Family’s Healthcare Hero
It is flu season, and it is a great time to take a step back and reevaluate healthcare needs within your family. Healthcare can be daunting and, oftentimes, we do not spend enough time planning for the unknown until we truly need it. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women make approximately 80 percent of healthcare decisions in the United States and are more likely to be the caregivers when a family member falls ill.

Know Your Options
Illnesses are the parts of life that we cannot always plan, but what we can do is to know when to go to the emergency room or urgent care. The severity of the medical issue is the key in knowing where to seek help. If the condition is life-threatening, go to the emergency room. If the healthcare need is a minor illness, then an urgent care center may be enough.

Find Your Champions
You can be the biggest champion of your personal healthcare, as well as that of your family’s healthcare, and be the best advocate for your needs. Yet, it is important to have a primary care physician, local emergency room, local urgent care and specialists whom your family trusts to ensure that you are receiving the best quality care possible.

Be Consistent
As your family’s healthcare hero, ensure that you are taking preventative healthcare measures. Get an annual physical; know your health numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and weight, according to the American Heart Association); remain active, exercise and eat healthy. These practices are key to maintaining good health and will assist in your longevity to live life to the fullest!
